What makes UnitedHealthcare different

  1. Every 2026 UnitedHealthcare plan in Alabama carries "No Referrals" in its name, so you can book an in-network specialist directly.

  2. Most Copay Focus, Value and Advantage plans include $0 virtual urgent care. Gold Advantage and Gold Copay Focus also list $5 Tier 2 prescriptions.

  3. Bronze, silver and gold Copay Focus plans have a $0 individual medical deductible, so many services use set copays from the first visit.

  4. A 2024 multi-year agreement keeps Huntsville Hospital, Decatur Morgan, Helen Keller, Athens-Limestone and five other system hospitals in its individual-plan network.

Is UnitedHealthcare a good fit?

A good fit if

  • You'd rather not get referrals to see specialists
  • Your care centers on Huntsville Hospital Health System
  • You'd use virtual urgent care or want a $0-deductible plan

Think twice if

  • UAB said in June 2025 that it doesn't take UnitedHealthcare's ACA individual plans. If you use UAB, confirm before you enroll.
  • In Mobile, USA Health Providence Hospital has been out of network since November 2025, and USA Health says its other hospitals left UnitedHealthcare's commercial network October 1, 2026.
  • It isn't sold in Montgomery, Autauga, Elmore or Lowndes counties, and CMS rated it 2 of 5 stars for 2026.
