What makes Blue Cross different

  1. Blue Cross is the one insurer sold statewide. In Autauga, Butler, Crenshaw, Elmore, Lamar, Monroe and Wilcox it was the only Marketplace option in 2026.

  2. CMS rated Blue Cross 4 of 5 stars overall for 2026, up from 3, with 5 stars for member experience. No other Alabama insurer scored above 2.

  3. These PPOs use the Hospital Choice Network. You pay less at lower-tier hospitals; Blue Value Silver outpatient surgery is $600 there versus $1,000 at higher-tier ones.

  4. Blue Saver Silver EPO is sold only in Jefferson, Shelby, Walker, St. Clair, Blount, Bibb and Chilton counties. It uses the Blue High Performance Network, with a primary care doctor you choose.

Is Blue Cross a good fit?

A good fit if

  • You want one insurer whose plans are sold in every Alabama county
  • A higher CMS quality rating matters to you
  • You want a catastrophic or HSA-eligible bronze plan

Think twice if

  • Increases vary widely by plan: Blue Value Gold rose 25.6%, while the Blue Protect catastrophic plan fell 2.3%.
  • Blue Cross Select and EPO plans need a referral from your chosen primary care doctor for most specialist visits.
  • On Blue Value and Blue Cross Select, check your hospital's tier: the same care costs more at a higher-tier hospital.
