What makes UnitedHealthcare different

  1. All 13 UnitedHealthcare NC Marketplace HMOs say No Referrals. UHC's admin guide confirms specialists do not need a primary care referral for coverage.

  2. 2026 agent maps name Atrium, UNC Health, Cone, Cape Fear Valley and Novant New Hanover across Charlotte, Triad, Triangle, Fayetteville and Wilmington corridors.

  3. Plan names lean on $0 Virtual Urgent Care, $0 Insulin, Copay Focus, Value and Advantage tiers, plus optional Dental + Vision variants.

  4. UnitedHealthcare of NC filed a 27.4% Initial average, the largest among returning Marketplace carriers on the NC DOI table.

Is UnitedHealthcare a good fit?

A good fit if

  • You live in one of UHC's 37 counties and want an HMO that does not require specialist referrals
  • You already use Atrium, UNC Health, Cone, Cape Fear Valley or Novant New Hanover and want to confirm Exchange participation
  • You want $0 virtual urgent care and $0 insulin designs in the plan name

Think twice if

  • The filed 2027 average is about 27.4% before tax credits. Compare after-subsidy prices carefully.
  • HMO: routine out-of-network care is not covered. Confirm the Individual Exchange network, not commercial UHC.
  • Medical Care scored 2 of 5 stars for 2025 and 2026; member experience was not rated.
